"Don't worry about your originality. You couldn't get rid of it even if you wanted to. It will stick with you and show up for better or worse in spite of all you or anyone else can do."
-Robert Henri

In starting a new painting, whether it be oil or watercolor, a new excitement takes hold. There is always the promise of potential. There is always more to learn, both about your craft and about yourself. I don't think I am alone when I say that I hear voices when I start a painting, I talk to myself, and I listen to all the lessons learned through both instruction and experimentation. Somewhere in the mix of it all a painting emerges that is part of who I am. Everything from the image that grabbed my attention and called to be painted, to the colors chosen to highlight or subdue part of the subject.

I paint from photographs and I paint from life. I can't say I prefer one over the other, although being at home with music playing and all my creature comforts handy is nice - being outside can be quite invigorating. It can also be painful, literally, bugs, sunburn, lugging equipment, but in many ways, well worth the effort. In painting outside (plein air) I almost always paint in oils. It's a more rugged and durable medium so it can withstand whatever might happen - even rain. Watercolor on the other hand is very fragile and so those paintings are done at my drawing table. Either way, in the studio or the outdoors, it's always nice to have company.

My studio too, was a labor of love. It had previouly been a barn. The home of Smokey the horse, as well as Lumpy and Hans Solo, the pigmy goats. In making the transition from Graphic Designer to full time painter, I found homes for my farm animals and moved into the totally renovated space. Those adventures are found under the Studio link.
